{"id":8648,"date":"2012-06-26T00:15:10","date_gmt":"2012-06-26T04:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/?p=8648"},"modified":"2012-07-25T23:20:32","modified_gmt":"2012-07-26T03:20:32","slug":"rad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/?p=8648","title":{"rendered":"Rad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8658\" title=\"rad00015\" src=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00015-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00015-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00015.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>If <em>Reckless<\/em>, the <em>Romeo and Juliet-<\/em>style vehicle for Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah contains the most overtly sexual high school dance sequence in all 1980s teen films (with the pair ogling each other to the sound of Romeo Void\u2019s <em>Never Say Never<\/em> featuring the all too subtle lyric, \u201cI Might Like You Better if We Slept Together\u201d), then Hal Needham\u2019s <em>Rad<\/em> must contain the least overtly sexual.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00036.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8679\" title=\"rad00036\" src=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00036-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00036-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00036.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In a sequence that would have done <em>Crash<\/em>-era <a href=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/?p=186\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">David Cronenberg<\/span><\/a> proud, Needham has his two leads, Cru and Christian (Bill Allen and Lori Loughlin) posing and balancing themselves on BMX bikes, doing wheelies and other fancy cycling tricks. Cru and Christian have hardly shared a word together by this point in the film, and Needham eschews this minimum chemistry requirement <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GQMpqw-i930&#038;feature=related\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">in favor of some quite audacious stuntwork for the poorly wigged stuntmen standing in for Allen and Loughlin<\/span><\/a>, all to the tune of Real Life\u2019s antiseptic <em>Send Me an Angel<\/em>. Sure, you can see Allen and Loughlin performing in close-ups, trying to make it look like they are standing on their bikes while some inanimate being is rotating the wheels, but Needham\u2019s carefree attitude towards filmmaking shines through, never once worrying about editing coherence or properly setting up scenes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00037.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8680\" title=\"rad00037\" src=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00037-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00037-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00037.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Needham, the longtime stuntman who found himself living in Burt Reynolds\u2019 poolhouse in the mid-1970s, suddenly promoted to director (for the Reynolds vehicle <em>Hooper<\/em>), but without ever finding his own place to live, was not one to care about standard storytelling requirements, made perfectly obvious by his <em>Cannonball Run-<a href=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/?p=7121\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Megaforce<\/span><\/a>-Cannonball Run II<\/em> period. In Needham\u2019s world, a gag need not make any sense as long as there is a moderately clear punchline, or at least the implication of said punchline. <em>Rad <\/em>fits so snugly into Needham\u2019s oeuvre that it\u2019s never clear whether the movie is an excuse for the 8 minute BMX montage that opens the film (and another 4 minute montage that arrives five minutes later), or he\u2019s just really laid back about setting up the slobs vs. snobs beats in this, his 30 year-old-teenagers in high school magnum opus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00027.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8670\" title=\"rad00027\" src=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00027-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00027-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00027.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The prom scene is central to <em>Rad <\/em>in many ways, but most importantly, it gives us the idea that Needham believes he can rely on other people\u2019s clich\u00e9s to fill out his scenes. Though we\u2019ve had only a hint of it earlier, whatever old codger Ray Walston\u2019s motivation is for trying to prevent Cru from entering the Helltrack race that\u2019s supposedly going to bring lots of money to the film\u2019s small town USA setting (though it\u2019s not apparent how), is totally unclear. And why Christian finds herself at the dance at all, supposedly she\u2019s fighting with the Aryan villain Bart Taylor (obviously inspired by the more evocative performance by William Zabka as the antagonist in <em>The Karate Kid<\/em>, made two years before <em>Rad<\/em>), makes no sense to us, let alone why after their successful performance, Cru and Christian find themselves surrounded by adoring fans, unable to get to each other, frustrating Cru until he rides off into the night off to find a another false crisis\u2026 Or how despite not knowing each other, they were perfectly in rhythm during their performance. Or why, in the final race of the film, <a href=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/radpink.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">there\u2019s a racer wearing pink pants<\/span><\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8689\" title=\"rad00003\" src=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00003-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00003-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00003.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Not that any of it really matters, as the point of the film is obviously exploiting a fad (though <em>Rad <\/em>was made three years after Nicole Kidman\u2019s <em>BMX Bandits<\/em>), which was a standard way of pandering to teens in the 1980s, whether it be via Skiing (<em>Hot Dog: The Movie<\/em>), breakdancing (<em>Breakin\u2019<\/em>), or rap (<em>Krush Groove<\/em>, <em>Rappin\u2019<\/em>), and producer Jack Schwartzman (father of <a href=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/?p=3960\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Jason<\/span><\/a> and husband to Talia Shire, which is why she plays Cru\u2019s mom in <em>Rad<\/em>) was more interested in ramping up as much product placement as he could squeeze into scenes. [\u201cBill, <a href=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/radkix00006.png\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">can you move the box of Kix more to the center of frame<\/span><\/a> so it\u2019s clear what cereal you\u2019re so obviously enjoying?\u201d]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00038.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8681\" title=\"rad00038\" src=\"http:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00038-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00038-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/regrettablesincerity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/rad00038.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Obviously, Schwartzman didn\u2019t concern himself with some of the subtext in scenes, such as watching co-villain Jack Weston salivating over Bart Taylor at the prom like a NAMBLA member waiting to accidentally lose his pants (\u201cis there anything that kid can\u2019t do?\u201d \u201cAnd we have him.\u201d), or that the androgynous girlfriend of Cru\u2019s friend is a dead ringer for Tatum O\u2019Neal circa <em>Little Darlings<\/em>, or that despite this being a \u201cbig race\u201d movie, all building to the final moments of suspense, the goal of all the participants seems to be to successfully sell out to a sponsor.
